Welcome to The Crow's Nest at DF-21, one of the best sites on the web for reviews and downloads of add-on levels for the LucasArts 3D first-person game Dark Forces. If you're a Dark Forces newbie or have never been to the Nest before, you should access the Database. To read a review on a level select it from the Review List.

Recent News and Additions

February 13, 2004 - It's good to be back. DF-21 has been having its share of server problems and changes in recent months, including the apparent loss of DF-21.org, the site where these pages were stored. They are now back on the .net side of things. I consequently also had to update all the level download links to point to df-21.net instead of the ftp at df-21.org. Hopefully we can get all these kinks and problems worked out soon.

June 15, 2002 - I've been making some additions/improvements to the site. Cory Buford has provided some of the missing files, such as the pictures for the showcase levels, and some of the missing mouse rollover images for the menus. So I've been able to put the original rollover effects back in. Mucho thanks, Cory! Cory is doing his own restoration efforts of the Crow's Nest, to be part of his Dark Forces Companion CD Project, so hopefully we can help each other out.

Again, I ask that if anyone has any more of the missing html files or graphics, or would be interested in recreating them (like the pictures for the 3DMad Tutorial) please let me know.

I've also fixed the formatting for some of the pages so they will display correctly in IE. This site was originally optimized for Netscape, so now the layout in IE matches.

June 1, 2002 - Geoffrey Elliott's original Crow's Nest was closed down around 1997, but the reviews were dutifully saved by Sheldon Friedman, and then stored in a directory by Lionel Fouillen. Additional pages and files were found at the Internet Archive (thanks to Andrew Nagy for introducing that site to me.) From there, we were able to restore most of the Crow's Nest HTML files, including reviews of Showcase leves and most of the Database. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get all the original graphics, so they are somewhat incomplete. Additionally, all the actual files (levels, componenets, etc.) were lost.

I then took what we had and reworked it to somewhat integrate it into the review section of DF-21, the Nest's new host site and the main site for today's current Dark Forces community. I did my best to keep the same look and feel of the original Crow's Nest, while making it work with DF-21. I kept the original text and pictures wherever possible. However, I did need to make a few changes: I have all the downloadable levels in the reviews link to DF-21's FTP archive; I removed the rollover effects on the menus (due to lack of the orginal graphics); I recreated some of the title graphics and altered others to include 'at DF-21' (to reflect that this is a different site); and I added a link (and accompanying graphic) to DF-21 in the navigation bar.

A few sections are still incomplete, particularily with the graphics. For example, the database's sections on enemies and weapons and ammunition no longer has the accompanying pictures. The showcase reviews are missing their screenshots. There also may still be some other broken links here and there, so if you find them, or if you want to help recreate some of the missing graphics, please let me know.

This restored site contains the Crow's Nest Reviews and the Database. The Launch Pad (links) and the Storage Area (files) have not been restored. Those kind of links and files (and reviews for newer levels) can be found in the appropriate sections at DF-21.

The Crow's Nest was Geoffrey Elliott's labour of love for many years, and this site is meant to preserve what he has given the Dark Forces community. The content in these pages is the result of his hard work, and we owe him much thanks.
