The Imperial Stronghold

Author(s): Oliver Thistlethwaite

Plot
The Rebels have recently discovered a hidden Imperial stronghold concealed high atop a ridge on the planet Fest. A previous attack from an Alliance outpost at the base of the ridge also on the planet failed in the face of an Imperial missile attack. Katarn's job is to take out the missile launchers, then find some way to destroy the tower before escaping in the Crow.

Review
This level comes off as your pretty average attempt. There's nothing fancy involved; a couple new things, some interesting architecture, regular ploys throughout the mission, and Boba Fett thrown in for good measure. Just your average level.

The architecture is reasonable, with fairly good texturing in most places. Some texture placement can make for an eyesore however.
You'll find that the somewhat confusing story isn't cleared up too much when you try to make your way through this mission. Overall you'll find the place to be rather interesting. There's nice use of platforms and bridges and you can have some fun taking alternate routes that the author may or may not have intended to be possible. But textures don't always line up and some of them clash pretty badly. On the other hand, in some places there is hardly any contrast which doesn't make the area all that interesting.

The puzzles in the level aren't difficult, but they go beyond just finding the keys to open doors, and actually have something to do with the plot laid out, something you don't see every day.

On the downside, this level has it's share of problems. The stronghold is supposed to be placed high up on a ridge. However due to poor construction the place seems to be floating in the air, with the sky below quite visible in many places. Other mistakes include some misplaced logics(flying stormtroopers? I have to assume it's either a mistake or a very poor decision to couple a regular stormtrooper WAX with probe droid logic), water that runs off a cliff but doesn't actually move and the inclusion of Dark Troopers and Boba Fett without any explanation of their being there. I don't see why Boba Fett would stand to be cooped up in a small box near the reactor switch anyway.

Overall
78Overall, there's a possibility you might like this. There's nothing fancy, a few problems that probably should have been fixed, but it's simple, straightforward and easy to run through in a few minutes. It's certainly not horrendous; I stick by my original statement that it's just an average level you can download for fun.
