Kyle Katarn has been many things in his life: farmer, Imperial commando, mercenary-for-hire, Rebel covert and reconnaissance agent, and Jedi Knight. Born on Sullust's agricultural moon of Sulon, he was raised by Morgan Katarn and his wife. Unfortunately, his mother died when he was very young, and young Kyle's upbringing fell upon his father, creating a special bond between the two. When he was old enough, he applied to the Imperial Academy, where he displayed exceptional skill in cybernetics system theory and information engineering.

Kyle�s training at the Academy, however, fell short when he received word that his father had been killed in a Rebel raid. Angered by the Rebels� ruthlessness, he finished his academic training and joined the Imperial Army, where he became a special operations agent, founding the Katarn Commandos.

It was during his service in the Army that he met Jan Ors, a secret Rebel undercover agent. Ors sensed the deep emotional scars in Katarn and learned of Kyle�s father's death. She saw to it that Kyle saw the true report of the "Rebel raid," which wasn�t a raid at all, but an Imperial massacre.

When Ors� cover was revealed, in return for her help in discovering the truth of his father�s death, Kyle helped her escape from the detention center and steal a small ship with which they escaped to a nearby Rebel base. There an untrusting Kyle rejected an offer to join the Rebellion. Instead he left the wide-eyed youth he had been behind and became a hardened mercenary working on the fringes.

Despite his refusal to join the Rebels, Kyle has still been a prominent figure for the Alliance in the Galactic Civil War. He is responsible for the success of such missions as obtaining the Death Star data tapes, the defection of Crix Madine, and the destruction of the Dark Trooper project. He has also captured the attention of many important galactic figures, including Mon Mothma, Jabba the Hutt, Boba Fett, and even Darth Vader.

Following the events of the Battle of Endor, Kyle was once again drawn into the great galactic struggle when he investigated his father's death and learned he had been killed by Jerec, a Dark Jedi who was searching for the mystical Valley of the Jedi. When Kyle returned home to play one of his father's lost data disks, he learned things about himself that would forever change his destiny. In a final message to his son, Morgan explained that Kyle was to be a future Jedi, and bestowed upon him the lightsaber of an ancient Jedi, Qu Rahn.

After a long and eventful hunt, Kyle finally managed to catch up with 8t88, the droid Jerec had hired to decipher the Valley�s map, and learned the location of the Valley. There he defeated the last of Jerec�s servant Jedi, destroyed the Dark Jedi himself before he could unleash the incredible power of the Valley upon the galaxy, and completed the last steps towards becoming a full-fledged Jedi Knight. Five years later he set up a Jedi training center on Altyr 5, instructing such people as Mara Jade.
